Presente

The Portuguese presente (present tense) is the foundation of everyday communication, expressing actions happening now, habitual routines, and universal truths. Regular -AR verbs like falar (to speak) follow the pattern fal-o, fal-as, fal-a, fal-amos, fal-am, while -ER and -IR verbs have their own endings. This tense is also commonly used to describe scheduled future events ("O avião parte amanhã" - The plane leaves tomorrow) and in storytelling to create vivid, immediate narratives. Mastering the presente is essential as it forms the basis for understanding other tenses and is by far the most frequently used tense in both spoken and written Portuguese.
